The Mahabodhi Temple Complex is the most sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide, located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is built around the holy Bodhi Tree, a descendant of the original fig tree under which Prince Siddhartha Gautama meditated and attained Enlightenment, becoming the Buddha. The complex is dominated by the magnificent Mahabodhi Temple (Mahavihara), first built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. It also includes the Vajrasana (Diamond Throne), marking the exact spot of Enlightenment, and numerous other stupas and shrines.
