About Sri Harmandir Sahib

Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, is the preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism, located in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab. Founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, its sanctum was designed by the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev. The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) and is gilded in pure gold, a feature added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It stands as a symbol of human brotherhood and equality, with four entrances welcoming people from all walks of life and faiths. A central feature is the Langar, a free community kitchen that serves meals to tens of thousands of people daily.
