Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, is the preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism, located in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab. Founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, its sanctum was designed by the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev. The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) and is gilded in pure gold, a feature added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
